My academic background includes a Bachelor of Social Work and a Masters of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Health Promotion. I have worked in the health promotion field since 1986. This was the year the World Health Organization completed the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, this seminal document has guided my work.

My career in Health Promotion began as a Coordinator for a multi-site hospital-based health information centre. I have worked in management positions with Alberta regional health authorities leading teams of Health Promotion professionals and researchers in exploring ways to effectively plan, implement and evaluate programs. Since 2003 I have completed consulting projects with several levels of government, non profit organizations, professional associations and post secondary institutions in population health promotion. In the recent past, I conducted research projects with The City of Red Deer; Alberta Health Services; and the Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Families and Communities at the University of Alberta.

I am also an adjunct assistant professor in the Centre for Health Promotion Studies, School of Public Health, University of Alberta. I have been formally associated with the Centre since 2005, regularly teaching distance and campus courses in community development, social and behavioural theory, determinants of health and health promotion strategies. I have also enjoyed providing supervision for practicum students.

NEW!
It is with great excitement that I will begin a postgraduate program (Doctor of Philosophy Medicine, Public Health) at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia in January 2012. The topic of my research is evaluating the effectiveness of comprehensive primary health care. The purpose of the research is to specifically study health promotion and disease prevention processes, structures, and outcomes that are considered integral components of CPHC systems
